Physical Education

Physical Education develops pupils’ physical competence, confidence and skills, as well as their knowledge and understanding, in athletics, dance, games, gymnastics, outdoor adventurous activities and swimming. It provides opportunities for developing independence, team work and leadership skills, and helps to promote positive attitudes towards active and healthy lifestyles. All children are expected to take part in the full range of activities appropriate to their age and ability. We aim to provide two hours of quality Physical Education per week for our children with opportunities for extra-curricular P.E. and sport activities.

Foundation Stage

Physical Education in the foundation stage provides opportunities for children to be active, to develop coordination, control and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity. ABC of movement: A= Agility B= Balance C=Coordination

Key Stage 1

Physical Education in Key Stage 1 provides opportunities for developing core movement, increasing confidence in ABC of movement individually and with others, engaging in competitive situations both against self and against others and co-operating in physical activities in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching
  • Develop balance, agility and co-ordination
  • Begin to apply ABC to range of activities
  • Participate in team games developing simple tactics of attacking and defending
  • Perform dances using simple movement patterns

Key Stage 2

Physical Education in Key Stage 2 provides opportunities to continue to apply and develop a broad range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways, linking skills to make actions and sequences of movement, communicating, collaborating and competing with each other, developing an understanding of how to improve and learning to evaluate and recognise their own success.

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Be able to jump, throw and catch as an isolated move or combined
  • Play competitive games and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
  • Develop flexability, strength, technique, control and balance
  • Perform dances using a range of movement patterns
  • Take part in outdoor activity challenges individually and as a team member
  • Be able to assess personal progress and know how to improve.
